Corporations Provide Support for Education Programs at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center

Fleet Bank, The Northeast Utilities Foundation, and SBC-SNET have made commitments to provide support for educational programs being offered at the new Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center in Mashantucket, Connecticut, which opened August 11, 1998.

The state-of-the-art complex is a major resource for students of all ages and features exhibits that contain extensive information and detail, challenging students and encouraging the development of lifelong learning skills. An education center, located in the center of the building, has been created to accommodate groups of 20 to 30 students each. Special activities are planned for the outdoor 1780s farmstead, the 325-seat auditorium, and the Research Center's archaeology labs. Working archaeology sites are located throughout the Tribe's reservation, and are part of the educational offerings.

Specialized classroom programs and educational tours for students from kindergarten through high school have been developed by the Museum and Research Center's Public Programs department, with a series of educational spaces strategically located throughout the facility to serve a variety of groups, including schools, scouting organizations and youth associations. Topics for discussion include the use of natural resources, an examination of Native history and culture from pre-history to the present, and the changing natural history of Mashantucket from the last Ice Age through the current century.
