Children's and Research Libraries

The Children's Library contains current and historical materials for children, by and about Native Peoples.  Educators will also find many useful materials in the Education Collection including books on educational theory and curriculum development relating to Native American studies. Groups and classes can schedule Children's Library visits to research Native American topics, learn about and explore the collections, or attend a presentation of books, tapes, and videos by Native American authors. Visits can be scheduled independently or as part of a Museum visit.

The Research Library contains current and historical information on the histories and cultures of indigenous peoples in the United States and Canada.  The collection includes books, serials, maps, pamphlets, brochures, micromedia, visual and audio recordings, and electronic media, and covers Native American history, anthropology, art and literature, as well as conservation studies and museum studies.

We encourage Educators and Group Leaders to use the Research and Children's Libraries. Our librarians will be happy to assist you in learning about and utilizing these important resources.

Please call the Research Library at (860) 396-6897 or the Children's Library at (860) 396-6899 for more information.

Educator Workshop on Evaluating Materials about Native Americans for Children

Educators learn how to evaluate books and other media by and about Native Americans in this workshop. By discussing evaluative criteria and examining selected materials, participants gain techniques and skills to help them use Native American literature in classrooms. The workshops are scheduled during the school year and groups may arrange other sessions through the Children’s Library.
