The Mashantucket Pequot Children's Library

What’s in the Children’s Library?
The Children’s Library houses a unique collection of materials for youth by and about Native people of North America. It includes books, videos, audiotapes, CDs, DVDs, and CD-ROMs.

The Children’s Library collection contains a great deal of excellent material, but because we collect widely, we also have many materials that contain stereotypes and inaccuracies. In order to help people use the collection, it has been divided up into several sections:

The Native American Research Collection is the collection that we recommend to visitors and researchers. It contains only books that were written, or endorsed by Native people or Tribal Nations. These are the best books in the Children’s Library for accurate and authentic historical and cultural information about Native people, because of their perspective, or who wrote them.

The Native American Historical Collection is the largest collection. It is composed of books, fiction and nonfiction, about Native people of North America (including Canada and Hawaii) that were written for children. Most of the materials in the Native American Research Collection are also duplicated in this collection. The Native American Historical Collection contains many books with inaccurate, insensitive, or stereotypical text or illustrations. The purpose of this collection is to create a historical record of the changing attitudes about American Indians in children's literature.

The Education Collection contains materials for educators that address teaching about American Indians. There are curriculum guides, lesson plans, and books and serials on Native American and multicultural education.

The Video, Cassette, Kit, CD-ROM, DVD and CD Collections contain multimedia materials. These materials vary widely in quality and authenticity and are not subdivided into Research and Historical classifications, as the book collections are.

The Reference Collection contains reference books about American Indians, as well as general reference materials on a variety of topics.

Who can use the Children’s Library?
Anyone can use the Children’s Library. We welcome school groups touring the museum (although we prefer to have 30 or less children at a time), teachers and students doing research, and the general public as well as museum visitors. Anyone under 14 years-old must be accompanied by an adult. There is no charge to use the library facilities.

Can the materials be borrowed?
We are not a lending library so materials cannot be borrowed. Anyone is welcome to use the collections on site. Copies and computer printouts can be made for a small fee.

What services does the Children's Library provide?
The librarian assists students, teachers, and others with their reference questions either in the library, by phone, or by email.

What programs are happening in the Children’s Library?

Please check the museum calendar, Native Visions, for programs in the Children’s Library.
We offer a workshop "Evaluating Materials for Children about American Indians” which introduces participants to criteria that can be used to examine the accuracy and authenticity of books, websites, and videos about Native people. We look critically at many good and bad examples of children’s literature and participants do some hands-on evaluating. This workshop is recommended for educators of all levels, librarians, and other adults who would like to be better informed when selecting materials about American Indians.

For more information about the workshop, please call 860-396-6899.
