Wednesdays in August, 2 pm
Sing Birds: Following the Path of Cahuilla Power

This 50-minute film illustrates cultural changes for individuals in the Cahuilla Band of Indians in California. Bird songs are traditional social songs that speak of Cahuilla origins, describing the environment and inhabitants. Free with Museum admission, free to Museum members.

Saturday, Aug. 6, 10 am–4 pm
Free Admission for Kids!

A visit to the Museum is great way to spend time with the kids, and this summer we’re making a visit even better because all children ages 15 and younger are admitted free on the first Saturday in August. Cannot be combined with any other offer for discounted adult admission rates.

Wednesday, Aug. 10, 12:30–2 pm
Native California Action Puzzle

Join us on the terrace for an original, exciting, and action-filled giant puzzle to solve using images from the Sing Me Your Story, Dance Me Home exhibit. This game rewards fast thinking and fast feet. All are welcome to participate and learn about art and poetry from Native California. Free with Museum admission, free to Museum members.

Thursday, Aug. 11, 1–2:30 pm
All About Bugs

Join Head Curator Steve Cook and Educator Candyce Testa (Pequot) to explore the Farmstead and nearby grounds looking for bugs and learning about their history, habits, biology, and that some insects are edible. Dress for the outdoors with sunscreen and insect repellant. Limited to 25, ages 8 and older. Free with Museum admission, Free to Museum members. Call (800) 411-9671 to register by Aug. 10.

Friday, Aug. 12, 10 am–3 pm
Family Archaeology Adventure

Become an archaeologist for the day as you work beside Museum scientists exploring King Philip’s War era (1675-1676) forts and campsites. Search for artifacts using metal detectors and trowels and learn to analyze what you dig up in the Museum’s archaeology labs. Wear work clothes and heavy shoes or boots. Pack lunch and water; dress for the outdoors with sunscreen and insect repellant. Limited to 15, ages 10 and older; parent or guardian must accompany people ages 10-15. $40/$30 for Museum members. Letterboxes on the Farmstead

Learn about Native life as you explore the 1780 Pequot Farmstead looking for letterboxes that contain a pad and a rubber stamp. Start at the farmhouse on the second floor to pick up the clues, choose a stamp, and try to locate all of the boxes. Free with Museum admission, free to Museum members.

Thursday–Saturday, Aug. 11–13, 11 am–3 pm
Discovery Carts: Learning Centers on Wheels

Look for our Discovery Carts stationed throughout the Museum exhibits. It’s an opportunity to handle artifacts and talk with museum educators. Play a Native game, identify animal furs, and learn about regalia and dances at the powwow cart. Free with Museum admission, free to Museum members.

Saturday, Aug. 20, 11 am–3 pm
Coastal Ecology at Bluff Point

Take a walking tour at Bluff Point State Park to explore some of the natural resources of coastal marshes and beaches with Head Curator Steve Cook. Wear beach-walking shoes, sunscreen, and insect repellant. Bring a bag lunch, plenty of water, and a pail for shells. Rain or shine. Limited to 20; ages 10 and older. $15/$5 for Museum members.
