Museum Educational Powwow

Join the Museum’s annual celebration of dancing, singing, and socializing. Emcee Bruce “Star” Curliss (Nipmuc) explains the dances, powwow etiquette, and the significance of this cultural gathering. Native artists demonstrate and sell their works of wampum, beaded jewelry, sweet grass baskets, and pottery. Taste fry bread, Indian tacos, and fresh lemonade. Grand Entry at 11 am and 1 pm daily. Free with Museum admission, free to Museum members.

Sizzling Summer Sounds

Presenting Native musicians Jana Mashonee (Lumbee), award-winning R&B; Tara-Louise Montour (Mohawk), classical violinist; Tru Rez Crew, hip-hop group; Laughing Woman (Mashantucket Pequot) and Eagle’s Wings (Ojibwe), traditional music; and the Pappy Johns Band, blues. Kick off your shoes, dance in bare feet, have lunch outside, and enjoy great music during this rare opportunity to hear world-famous performers. Free with Museum admission, free to Museum members.

Fire Hollow Reading Circle & Discussion

Melissa Tantaquidgeon Zobel, Mohegan medicine woman and award-winning author, discusses her new novel, Fire Hollow, about a Mohegan Indian living during the Victorian period. Borrow copies of the book from the Research Library or purchase one in the Museum gift shop. Limited to 20 participants, ages 16 and older. Call (860) 396-6897 by July 9 to register. Free.

Baskets, Bags, and Bowls: Short Hike and Demonstration

Learn about containers that use wood, bark, fibers, and dyes for construction and decoration. Museum staff demonstrates how plants are prepared for making baskets, bags, and bowls. At 11 am, join Senior Researcher Dr. Jason Mancini for a short hike on the Mashantucket reservation to locate and collect plant resources. Hike limited to 25 participants. Mystic River Tour aboard the Sabino

Members Only. Join Senior Researcher Dr. Jason Mancini for a cruise on Mystic Seaport’s 101-year-old steamboat Sabino. Learn about wampum, the Pequot massacre at Mystic Fort, Indian mariners, and the Pequots’ first reservation at Noank. Refreshments included.
