IndiVisible Exhibit Panel Discussion

In conjunction with the current Mashantucket Gallery exhibit, a panel of southern New England Native community members discusses their perspectives on IndiVisible: African-Native American Lives in the Americas. Facilitated by Dr. J. Cedric Woods (Lumbee), director of the Institute for New England Native American Studies, UMass Boston. Panelists are Angelina S. Casanova-Bell (Mashantucket Pequot), manager of Legislative Affairs, Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation; Rae Gould (Nipmuc), Ph.D., lecturer and repatriation coordinator, Department of Anthropology, UMass Amherst; and Ramona Peters (Mashpee Wampanoag), director of NAGPRA Office, Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. Q&A period after brief presentations, followed by light refreshments and further conversation. Limited to 110 participants. Free with Museum admission, free to Museum members.

Honoring Native Veterans
Join Master of Ceremonies Wayne Reels (Pequot), Mashantucket Pequot veterans, and other Native veterans to acknowledge the contributions of the armed services. Kenny, Tyson, and Lauren Merrick (Sioux/Mandan/Arikara) of Mystic River Drum provide honoring songs. All veterans and the public are invited to attend. American Red and Black
Alicia Woods received the Best Documentary Award at the 2006 ImageNation Film Festival for this film that follows six African-Native Americans as they reflect upon the issues of Native and African heritage. Adult language is included in the 40-minute film. Free with Museum admission, free to Museum members.

Native American Forts in Southern New England
Join Director of Research Dr. Kevin McBride for a lecture on the architecture and archaeology of Native forts, followed by a tour of the archaeology labs and concluding with a field visit to a fortified village on the reservation occupied during King Philip’s War. Black Indians: An American Story
This award-winning film, narrated by James Earl Jones, brings to light a forgotten part of America’s past: the cultural and racial fusion of Native and African Americans. A 60-minute film, it is appropriate for all ages. Free with Museum admission, free to Museum members.

Native American Days at the Museum
Celebrate Native American heritage, art, and culture; make corn husk figures, petroglyph pendants, or pinch pots from 1-3 pm, $5 for each activity; hear Native stories by Trudie Lamb Richmond (Schaghticoke) at 1 pm; and meet Native artists as they demonstrate and sell their work. Free with Museum admission, free to Museum members.

Celebrate Native American cultures in the Children’s Library. There are many excellent picture books written by Native people for all ages, reading abilities, and interests. Make a bookmark to take home with you.  Free with Museum admission, free to Museum members.

Pequot Farmstead Plant Tour
Dr. Jason Mancini leads a tour of the Museum’s farmstead and the surrounding landscape while discussing Pequot gardens and plants used at Mashantucket for food, medicine, and materials.
