Center Seam Moccasin Workshop

Join Head Curator Steve Cook for a look at some 18th and 19th century center seam moccasins in the Museum’s collections, then make a pair of your own. Materials included. Gifts of the Land: Harvest Thanksgiving Celebration
Friday
Visit the Museum on Friday to celebrate the fall harvest. Learn how to use an atlatl and a bow and arrow. Play Native games.  Discovery carts offer hands-on information about Native life. Free with Museum admission, free to Museum members.

Celebrate the fall by learning about the harvest, mushrooms, how to preserve meat and fish, and the important role of bats in our environment. Discovery carts and Native games are ongoing all day throughout the Museum.

11:30 am. Bats
Discover the world of bats with Averell Manes, Ph.D., a licensed wildlife rehabilitator specializing in bats. Her slide presentation covers local bats and the White Nose Syndrome that threatens them. Free with Museum admission, free to Museum members.

1:30 pm. Mushrooms: Wild, Edible, Medicinal, & Artistic
E. Barrie Kavasch (Cherokee) presents a program about mushrooms followed by an identification foray outdoors. Free with Museum admission, free to Museum members.

2-3 pm. Preserving Foods
Learn how to preserve and put up food with Steven Betancourt, the Museum’s director of Food and Beverage, in the Museum restaurant and kitchen. This is a hands-on demonstration in Native and colonial traditions. Limited to 25 participants. $20/$10 Museum members. Call (800) 411-9671 or email seleazer@mptn-nsn.gov by Sept. 17 to register.

Smithsonian Day

Smithsonian members, magazine subscribers, and friends receive free admission for two people upon presentation of the Smithsonian Museum Day pass, available at www.smithsonianmag.com/museumday.

Educators’ Open House

Teachers and their families are invited to a free day at the museum. Sample our guided tours; learn about the new exhibit, Pequot Lives: Almost Vanished; and enjoy Native games and art activities.
