Free Museum Admission to Area Student Groups
Ledyard, North Stonington and Preston public schools

Mashantucket, Conn. – Dec. 22, 2015 – Today, the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center announced it will offer free admission to area student groups, thanks to the generous support of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. Now, more than 3,700 students from Ledyard, North Stonington and Preston public schools may freely access the world’s largest Native American museum, where they can explore interactive environments, view an award-winning film, learn about the region’s rich natural history and benefit from unique multicultural learning opportunities. The recently approved resolution allows student groups in grades K through 12 from the designated towns free entry to the museum once per academic year, effective immediately.

“We love seeing students’ enthusiasm as they participate in the museum’s multi-sensory journey through time. Designed not only to encourage a deeper understanding of our area’s rich Native history, the experience also exposes them to messages of diversity and multicultural tolerance – invaluable concepts as they prepare for life in today’s globalized world,” said Dr. Jason Mancini, Pequot Museum executive director. “We are grateful to tribal council vice chairwoman Crystal Whipple and her staff for creating this initiative and inviting students to experience our region’s rich heritage.”

While students immerse themselves in the history of the land and the people who inhabited it, educators can incorporate timely lessons highlighting social justice and tolerance. Furthermore, museum visits directly support fourth and ninth grade Common Core curriculum initiatives in Native American studies and U.S. history. Visits to the Pequot Museum are also very popular in November, during Native American Heritage month. The Pequot Museum is uniquely positioned to deliver in-depth educational endeavors, as its on-site research center is home to extensive libraries, archives and special collections featuring a wide range of materials about the Native cultures of North America.

Educators interested in planning a visit should contact Ms. Endawnis Spears, group sales associate, by phone at 860-396-6839 or by email at groupsales@pequotmuseum.org.
