Memoir of Captain Paul Cuffe,
A Man of Colour: To Which is Subjoined The Epistle of the Society of Sierra Leone, In Africa & c. York, England: C. Peacock. 1811

Paul Cuffe, Sr., one of the most important and least known of the anti-slavery leaders in the United States, was the son of a freed African slave and a Wampanoag Indian woman from Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. He rose from poverty to become one of the wealthiest men of color in the United States by the first decade of the nineteenth century, his fortune based on skill as a shipbuilder and merchant-captain. Through his biography we see his courage in expressing his passionate opposition to slavery that led to the organization of Sierra Leone on the west coast of Africa as a home for manumitted slaves. A short introduction provides additional details on his life and times.

This book is suitable for use in junior and senior high school history and social studies programs.

A Pequot Indian: During Thirty Years Spent At Sea, and in Traveling in Foreign Lands. Vernon: Horace N. Bill. 1839

Paul Cuffee. Jr., the son of his famous father of the same name and a Wampanoag woman from Martha’s Vineyard, began his career as a member of the crew on his father’s ship. During the War of 1812, he was captured by the English in the Caribbean, imprisoned, and eventually escaped. He spent the rest of his life sailing on merchant ships and whalers, ships that touched nearly every part of the world. His autobiography details his many adventures and provides insights into the commerce of the times, the products bought and sold, and the lives of the men who carried it on.  A short introduction provides additional details on his life and times.
