American Red and Black

Museum Executive Director Kimberly Hatcher-White (Mashantucket Pequot) introduces the film and afterwards shares her personal story of returning to the reservation during a discussion with the audience about the film. Ages 16 years & older.*

In the White Man’s Image
This film examines the historical attempts to “Americanize” Indians during the late 1800s, focusing on the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania that served as a model for boarding schools for Native youth around the nation and Canada. Poet and professor Ron Wellburn (Gingaskin & Assateague/Cherokee/African American) from UMass Amherst introduces the film and discusses the issues it raises about cultural genocide with the audience afterward.  The latest of his six books “Coming Through Smoke and the Dreaming” (Greenfield Review Press, 2000) will be available for purchase in the Museum’s retail store.*

Race is the Place

A compelling look at racism today, this documentary paints a bold, lyrical and poetic montage of performances by various artists, comedians and poets from minority communities and the messages their voices send. James Luna (LaJolla band of Lusieno Indians), one of the artists who performs in the 60-minute film, leads a discussion afterward.*
