Scout Workshops

The Mashantucket Pequot Museum offers two-hour workshops for scout troops of all ages to help meet badge requirements for programs in Native American culture, archaeology and geology. They are scheduled every Saturday at 10 am and 1 pm from October through May and the fee of $11 per scout includes a guided exhibit tour and museum admission for the day.

From the Earth
Scouts make a traditional style pinch pot out of clay while learning the history of clay pottery created and used by Pequot and other Native people of the Northeast. Program includes a Pequot Child tour. Recommended for ages 6 & older.

From the Garden
Learn about the “Three Sisters” and the importance of corn to Native Americans. Scouts make a simple figure or game from corn husks. Program includes a Pequot Child tour. Recommended for ages 6 & older.

Petroglyphs: Images in Stone
Get to know petroglyphs, an ancient form of communication. Explore the “who, what, when, where, and why” of these centuries-old rock carvings. Scouts learn about some of the different symbols and then carve their own petroglyph into soapstone. Program includes a Gift of the Land tour. Recommended for ages 10 & older.

The Truth Behind Wampum
Scouts learn the meaning of wampum and its importance to Native people of southern New England. Using simulated wampum beads, scouts create their own bracelet. Program includes a Gifts of the Land tour. Recommended for ages 6 & older.

Native American Games and Sports
Shinny, hoop and pole, hubbub, ring and pin! Immerse yourself in Native American tradition as you explore the cultural value of games and sports throughout Indian Country. Program includes Pequot Child tour. Recommended for ages 6 & older.
