 EDUCATIONAL ALIGNMENT 

Empowering Young Minds Through Indigenous Perspectives

Every program is designed to support student development in:

  • Reading, writing, listening, and speaking
  • Language arts and interdisciplinary inquiry
  • Civic engagement and cultural literacy

Programs align with the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework, integrating arts and humanities to prepare learners for college and beyond through inquiry-based study rooted in Indigenous knowledge systems.

Guided Group Tour Experiences

Exhibit Highlight Tour 

Length: 1 Hour | All Ages 

Travel through our museum with us over 20,000 years of history as we highlight key sections of our history! Giving facts along the way and prepping you for your time at the museum.

 

Pequot Village Tour

Length: 1 Hour | All Ages

Learn about the daily life in our Pequot Village. The program focuses closely on the work, play, and general experience of the children in the village.

 

Colonialism 101 

Length: 1 Hour | Grades 6 and up

Learn the strategies, institutions, and ideas that dispossessed Native peoples of their land and how they continue to effect Native life today.

Enrichment Programs

Colonialism 101: The Class

Length: 1 Hour

Like the tour of the same name, this program focuses on the history and continuing effects of the colonial project in North America. Participants learn from and engage in discussion with our Native educators.

 

Coastal Connections

Length: 1 Hour

Rivers, waterways, and the Atlantic Coast played an important role in Pequot life. Learn more about the connections between the Pequots and the water in this hour-long enrichment class.

 

Powwow Education

Length: 1 Hour

This program highlights song, dance, art, and the joy of powwow! Learn the history and evolution of the modern-day powwow. Participants will gain an understanding of the cultural importance of these sacred gatherings, while also learning proper etiquette for attendance.

 

Archaeology’s Window to Past

Length: 1 Hour | Grades 3 and up | Maximum: 30ppl

Students discover the answer to this question in a hands-on enrichment program. Students are divided into small groups to work with simulated refuse heaps from three different time periods in Pequot history. Their task is to identify and interpret artifacts from each time period, understand why cultures change over time and the reasons for change.

Seeqan (Spring) Workshop Offering

Corn Husk Creations

Length: 1 Hour | All Ages
This workshop shows a traditional craft that is designed to teach traditional Native values and the art of corn husk creations, a natural resource from Mother Earth.

Neepun (Summer) Workshop Offering

Wampum Bracelets

Length: 1 Hour | All Ages
This is a hands-on learning workshop discussing the origin and cultural significance of wampum beads that are made from quahog and whelk shells. Participants will create their own unique replica bracelet as a keepsake.
