Reading Across Turtle Island is an initiative of the Mashantucket Pequot Museum to promote literacy and awareness of indigenous culture and authors through identification, understanding, interpretation, creation, and communication in today’s information-rich and fast-changing world.
To encourage indigenous and non-indigenous communities to support and create awareness of the rich culture of tribal communities across Turtle Island through traditional and modern-day forms of storytelling and sharing.
Turtle Island is an Indigenous name for North America. The name comes from various Indigenous oral histories that tell stories of a turtle that holds the world on its back, based on a creation story common to many Indigenous peoples of the northeastern woodlands of North America.
In many Indigenous cultures, the turtle is considered a symbol of life, and the story of Turtle Island consequently speaks to various spiritual and cultural beliefs.
The Wetu Book Club Jr. is provided by the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center as an effort to celebrate indigenous culture, promote reading and highlight books written by Native American authors, as well as crafts and programs from all over Turtle Island.
